The military junta arrested the Kachin National Congress (KNC) chairperson near his medical office in Naypyitaw.

“A group in plainclothes arrested Dr M Kawn La, but because they were not in uniform, we don’t know if they were police or soldiers,” a representative from the Kachin party told NMG.

The men grabbed the Kachin leader at about 4pm on Wednesday, August 25, and  confiscated his vehicle, another KNC source said, explaining that no one knows where they took him.

KNC members met to discuss the chairperson’s arrest and his disappearance.

M Kawn La contested the 2015 and 2020 general elections. During the recent race, he unsuccessfully campaigned for a seat in the House of Nationalities for Momauk Township.

Following the February 1 coup, under M Kawn La’s leadership, the KNC and other Kachin parties and leaders formed the Kachin People’s Political Front.
